Sugar-free School Zones
There is an elementary school in Georgia (http://www.dekalb.k12.ga.us/brownsmill/health.html) that is changing out their snack and drink machines for sugar-free alternatives. They are changing their lunches to provide healthier meals for the students. In fact, I read on one site that even cupcakes for Birthdays are not allowed. Sounds extreme, but in a study in Sweden, they found that a sugar-free school is helping decrease the percentage of obese students in the school http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=070423110721.l8xrsiv6&show_article=1. So maybe those school lunches are not quite as healthy as we had hoped. I like the idea of a sugar-reduced school. I don't see a need for vending machines for the students, but sending in cupcakes for a birthday doesn't seem so extreme.

With all the emphasis that lawmakers and others put on test scores these days I thought it was clever how the site for Browns Mill touched on the fact that healthier eating can lead to higher test scores. I know that I personally have much better concentration and am more alert when I make healthy choices than when I don't.
With all of the emphasis on sugar, I think people forget that a lot of the school food is made processed foods. These foods can be just as bad as sugary foods because they're full of preservatives, dyes, and salt. I wish schools would take a more natural approach to our children's diet.
